Can You Hear the Love Tonight?

We’ve all experienced it; you hear that special song and suddenly you’re taken back to a romantic moment with your sweetie. Why is music so powerfully tied to our memories?

According to a recent study conducted by a researcher at the University of California, Davis, the region of our brain that holds the memories of our past is the same region that links familiar music, memories and emotion.

“What seems to happen is that a piece of familiar music serves as a soundtrack for a mental movie that starts playing in our head,” said Petr Janata, associate professor of psychology at UC Davis’ Center for Mind and Brain. “It calls back memories of a particular person or place, and you might all of a sudden see that person’s face in your mind’s eye.”

Here’s a fun project for the two of you: think of songs that remind you of your honey and create a soundtrack of your romance . Need some help? Check out the top 100 romantic songs of all time from BeatKing.com.
