Are You Romantic Salutes Our Veterans

This week, our gratitude and respect goes out to the 25 million military veterans who have served our country.
In honor of Veteran’s Day and in the spirit of romance, you and yours should take a peek at the book Letters to Lee, a first person account of a love shared across years and miles. It tells the story of Lt. Gen. James V. Edmundson and his wife Lee’s romance through a series of letters, vignettes and period newspaper and magazine articles of the period. The letters begin in Hawaii in 1939 and continue through World War II, during which Edmundson served as a pilot in 107 combat missions.

Thank you to all who have and continue to serve our country.

Love Never Dies

It’s time for musical theater buffs to rejoice! Love Never Dies, the highly anticipated sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, is scheduled to open on Broadway on November 11, 2010.

Composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, first began plans for the sequel in 1997. Following a conversation with Maria Björnson, the designer of The Phantom of the Opera, Lloyd Webber decided to set the sequel in turn-of-the-(20th)century New York City.

Love Never Dies is set in 1906, approximately a decade after The Phantom of the Opera. The Phantom, having fled Paris, is running a freak show at Coney Island with Madame Giry and her daughter, Meg. Meanwhile, Christine Daaé has become a famous opera singer who’s fallen on hard times after her once-handsome drunken husband, Raoul Victome de Chagny, squanders their fortune. Christine accepts a high-paying job at one of Coney Island’s latest attractions, arriving with Raoul and their son, Gustave, and unknowingly returning to the Phantom.

Money Talks

Are you financially intimate with your partner? In today’s world, our finances can be just as complicated as our relationships. Money is a top contributor to the end of relationships, often ahead of sex and intimacy. How do you come to an understanding about money with your honey? Experts say honesty is always the best policy.
"Shared information is the best way to avoid a fight," says Brooke M. Stephens, financial advisor and author of Wealth Happens One Day at a Time: 365 Days to a Brighter Financial Future. "Money and marriage is about being adult, mature and responsible."
Here are some tips to keep your finances from interfering with your romance:

  • Start talking – Knowing and understanding each other’s feelings about spending, saving and investing will give you a solid foundation to work from.

  • Joint and separate accounts – Getting a joint account for household expenses and maintaining separate checking and savings accounts for non-household related purchases is a good idea.

  • Separate credit – It’s important that each person develops good and separate credit, giving each other options if there are credit difficulties and providing protection should the relationship end.

Personalizing Your Affection

Bringing the love of your life sulky flowers and lavish chocolates for no reason can sometimes lack a personal touch. While the gesture may be nice, your main squeeze needs meaning to accompany all of these layers of love you’re throwing her way. With all the romantic fantasies and sappy love stories she’s seen growing up, you need to personalize your romantic antics to really impress her. Rather than just flowers (and make sure they’re her favorite type, or at least meaningful: http://www.floristdex.com/types-of-flowers/), slip a copy of her favorite poem on a card in the middle of the bouquet you get her. You could even go the extra mile and write her a poem yourself: http://www.ehow.com/how_2004920_romantic-poem-girl.html.

Have a great story about how you've gone the extra mile and made the extra effort with your honey? Let us know!
